Founded in 1660, The Royal Society is the national academy of sciences of the UK and the Commonwealth. The Society plays an influential role in national and international science policy and is dedicated to promoting excellence in science. Fellows and Foreign Members, who are elected for life on the basis of scientific excellence, have included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Dorothy Hodgkin, Francis Crick, James Watson and Stephen Hawking. Today there are approximately 1,500 Fellows and Foreign Members, including more than 70 Nobel Laureates.

The Royal Society publishes seven, high quality peer-reviewed journals covering: biological, cross disciplinary and physical sciences; history and philosophy of science; and cross-disciplinary research. The Royal Society is a member of Crossref and guarantees perpetual access to its articles in electronic format.

Consortial Policy

The Royal Society is available to negotiate agreements with national and local consortia, offering customized pricing that takes into consideration multiple factors such as the number of sites involved, with the objective to increase the availability of peer-reviewed content amongst the scientific community.

These are some of the standard parameters used:

  • Multiple years contract for three years
  • Fixed price cap for the duration of the contract, lower than the standard yearly increase from the publisher’s catalogue
  • Deeply Discounted Price for print subscriptions
  • Perpetual Access guaranteed after the termination of contract
  • “Opt-out” clause in case of superior or irresistible force (force majeure)

Impact Factors

The 2009 Impact Factors show that Royal Society journals have performed very well.

Proceedings B, Interface and Biology Letters all achieved very impressive increases. Interface climbed above 4.0 for the first time and is back in fourth place once again (behind Science, Nature and PNAS), whilst Biology Letters continued the steep rise it has shown every year since it was launched in 2005.
